Angela "Angyil" McNeal Prolific popper and hip-hop dancer Angyil McNeal has been drawn to dance for as long as she can remember. She cut her first moves in her back garden in Kansas City, USA, during summer parties, barbeques and family functions, before taking her first ballet class at the age of 10. Angyil expanded her skillset at Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts in middle school, continuing with ballet while adding jazz and modern. She was invited to do an internship with the globally renowned New York African-American ballet company Alvin Ailey and trained alongside some of the most elite ballet dancers in the country. As her pursuit of dance heightened, at the age of 16, she could no longer ignore how ballet's strict structure had been stifling her free spirit and expression. Angyil moved to the Bronx in New York and began honing her skills as a self-taught popper. Inspired by the dancers she saw on the subway and in the streets, she soon realised this was the type of dance she wanted to pursue. After shooting a music video with the same street dancers, she started to practise with them, became part of the crew, and started performing and busking with them. However, that was met with tension by the police, and they nearly got arrested.

From there, Angyil decided to focus on pursuing alternative platforms. She quickly rose to the top of the male-dominated scene and began to gain a reputation around the world thanks to videos of her battles going viral. Her highly original style has helped her win battles around the globe and be crowned the Freestyler of the Year at the World of Dance Awards. Angyil also finished as the runner-up at the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final in 2019, and in 2021 triumphed in the Red Bull Dance Your Style USA event. Outside of dance, her other main passions are fashion and film. This has led to her starting up her own clothing line and launching a production company. A lover of artistic expression, Angyil is proud to help her local community and has created spaces where they can express themselves. "Dancing has helped through a lot of craziness," she says. "I'm pretty sure it can do that for many other people. I think the arts, period, can ignite a global change."
