WELCOME to Songs for the House of Returning – a new large-scale performance by Indonesian artist Melati Suryodarmo.

Melati Suryodarmo—one of Asia’s leading performance artists—returns to Lilith Performance Studio with a long-anticipated new production. Since their first collaboration in 2007, several large-scale works have been created together and subsequently presented internationally.

In Songs for the House of Returning, Suryodarmo explores the growing distance between the human body and the natural systems that once structured collective life. Inspired by ancient temple sites in Indonesia, the body is approached as a “human temple”—a site where sensation, memory, and attention converge. Through durational actions and the continuous construction and deconstruction of objects, the performance creates a shifting environment that evolves over time.

Live sound and music by Singaporean musician and artist Yuen Chee Wai form a central element of the work. The performance unfolds over a total of 33 hours, presented in eleven cycles of three hours each, bringing together dancers from Indonesia and Sweden.
