ELISION Ensemble: Kinna

ELISION Ensemble is often described as Australia’s leading ensemble for contemporary music, yet its lineup also demonstrates how truly global art music is. The members come from several continents, and for these concerts the ensemble is further augmented by Sweden’s own Karin Hellqvist on violin. ELISION has become renowned for its performances of complex and virtuosic music within the movement that has come to be known as “new complexity,” represented on the concert programme by Richard Barrett’s Sorcerer for pedal steel guitar.

The programme also includes two works by the Australian composer Liza Lim, with whom the ensemble has enjoyed a long-standing collaboration, as well as a work by the conductor Aaron Cassidy. It is precisely through such sustained and close collaborations that ELISION is able to strive toward previously unimaginable heights of musicianship, in keeping with its motto: “impossible is a relative word.” Over the course of its nearly 40-year history, the ensemble has undertaken 50 tours in 22 countries and commissioned 800 new works—clear evidence of how dependent the world of art music is on its steadfast champions, who year after year tirelessly push the boundaries of what music can be.
