Kevlar soul

Kevlar Soul is an admirable drama that combines a high level of artistic integrity with deep social concern. It is a film that very openly focuses on brothers Robin and Alex who, after the death of their mother, live with their alcoholic father, a former career officer. Maria Eriksson-Hecht’s direction is characterised by the utmost care for both the narrative and for the visual expression. Her sensitive character direction captures the film’s main strength: the precise tonality in Josef Kersh’s and Rio Svensson’s skinless portrayals of the young brothers. The connection between them is tried and tested by violence, love, and a youthful energy in both body and soul. The razor-sharp casting is complemented by Torkel Peterson, who portrays a father who embodies the betrayal of the adult world, and Adja Sises, who gives a lively interpretation of the girl from the nicer side of town. The film lends its title from an early song by Kent and plays out in the band’s hometown of Eskilstuna – a divided city where the industrial landscape has become a playground for a listless generation about to be lost. Maria Eriksson-Hecht’s feature film debut is both a burning depiction of society and a deeply touching portrait of brotherhood.

The Swedish feature film Kevlar Soul (Kevlarsjäl) is nominated for the 2026 Nordic Council Film Prize. The nominees are director Maria Eriksson-Hecht, screenwriter Pelle Rådström, and producers Ronny Fritsche and Lizette Jonjic.
