BOWIE BY SUKITA

The first meeting between David Bowie and photographer Masayoshi Sukita took place in London the summer of 1972. After seeing a Bowie live show, Sukita managed to talk himself into a photo session; a session that started what was to become one of musical history’s most legendary collaborations, spanning almost 40 years.

Sukita was perhaps the one who best documented Bowie’s many transformations and characters – from the 70s glam rock, via the Berlin 70s, to the real man behind the mask during the 90s and 2000s. Many of Sukita’s images have become iconic, not least the classic cover photo for the album “Heroes” and the “Watch That Man” series featuring Bowie as the Space Samurai.

Now, 100 of Sukita’s images are being shown for the first time in Gothenburg at the former Konsthallen, Götaplatsen 7.

About Masayoshi Sukita

Masayoshi Sukita was born in 1938 and after working as a fashion and advertising photographer, he transitioned to music in the early 70s. He has held several major exhibitions featuring his photographs of David Bowie at venues including the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, and the Paul Smith Space Gallery in London.

In addition to his fantastic images of David Bowie, Masayoshi Sukita has also photographed Iggy Pop, Joe Strummer, Devo, P.I.L., The B-52’s, Ryūichi Sakamoto, Yellow Magic Orchestra and many more.

Exhibition Details

The exhibition Bowie by Sukita runs until August 30th.

The exhibition is produced by Gbg Art AB in collaboration with Ono Arte and photographer Masayoshi Sukita. Curators: Maurizio Guidoni and Vittoria Mainoldi, Ono Arte Contemporanea, Bologna.
