SUGAR – an opera featuring music by Chevalier de Saint-George, the first Black opera composer Concept, adaptation and direction: Charlotta Huldt
Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-George, was a violin virtuoso, composer, conductor and fencer, and helped inspire the story of The Three Musketeers – one of the most fascinating figures of 18th-century Paris. He was born in Guadeloupe, the son of a French plantation owner and an enslaved African woman, Anne.
In SOCKER, Saint-George’s music meets a new dramatic narrative in which his mother is also brought out of the shadows of history.
The performance moves between Guadeloupe and France, between colonialism and the Enlightenment, love and survival – telling the stories of the people and lives that existed behind the magnificent salons and musical culture of Europe.
The music is by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-George, adapted and shaped into a staged performance by Charlotta Huldt, who is also responsible for the concept and direction.
Featuring actress Maria Llerena, opera singers and musicians.
SOCKER had its world premiere in Havana at the International Mozart Festival in 2024. In the summer of 2026, this version was performed at Elghammar Castle – and now the production comes to the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm.
