Premiered in 1887, Verdi's Otello is a masterpiece that is as philosophically profound as it is theatrically gripping. Shakespeare's tale of an outsider, a great hero who cannot control his jealousy, was carefully shaped by librettist Arrigo Boito into a tight and powerful libretto.
All three lead roles are demanding – making the opera a challenge to stage – but the role of Otello in particular requires an outstanding natural instrument capable of both powerful and finely tuned timbres, outstanding musical intelligence and great stage expression.
Soprano Ailyn Pérez makes her Met debut as the suffering Desdemona, joined by baritone Artur Ruciński as the evil Iago. Michele Mariotti conducts the Met Orchestra and Chorus in this breathtaking score.
