In the mini-exhibition “Expo 1900”, we present a decanter by Émile Gallé (1845–1904), Europe’s most renowned glass artist around the turn of the 20th century. Based in Nancy, in northeastern France, Gallé was one of the first artists to redefine glass from a functional object into an art form. He is also considered one of the most important representatives of French Art Nouveau.
Gallé’s works are characterised by beauty, poetry and technical brilliance. He also developed the idea of “speaking glass”, in which the design of a work is based on a literary quotation or text. In this Kunstkvarter, you can learn about the fascinating story behind Gallé’s decanter, which was acquired for Kode at the Paris Exposition in 1900.
