The workshop is based on the Japanese painting technique Nihonga. Participants will learn how to make Japanese water-based paint from scratch, using Japanese pigments, a binding agent and water. The paint will be tested with a wide selection of brushes on large sheets of watercolour paper. The focus of the course will not be on achieving a finished result, but rather on developing familiarity with and a feel for the materials – and the joy of creating!
Aurora Solberg explores colour, materials and composition, primarily through water-based painting on paper. Following an extended trip to Japan in 2018, she has worked with materials and techniques from Nihonga, the traditional Japanese style of painting. She also works with risography, producing prints and artists’ books.
Solberg completed her Master’s degree at KHiB in 2017 and has since initiated and participated in a number of exhibitions, including the Itoshima Arts Farm Festival in Japan, Hå gamle prestegård and KB Contemporary. In 2022, she completed a public art commission for the Bergen Light Rail and her work has also been acquired by KORO and the Grieg Collection. In 2024, she created the artist’s book The Woods We Live In in collaboration with Pamflett. A second edition was produced in Tokyo in 2025.
The course will take place over two evenings: on 14 and 21 October, 17-20.
