Ags Connolly is a traditional country artist from Oxfordshire, England, widely considered to be one of the best country singer-songwriters ever to emerge from the UK. Songwriting legend Tom Russell describes his music as “killer”.
His fourth studio album Siempre takes the glimmers of Texas border sounds heard on Ags’ previous records and merges them with Tejano music and barroom waltzes while also accommodating his honky tonk and singer-songwriter roots. “It’s best described as a Texas music album”, Ags explains. “Texas-style country is my favourite, and it takes many forms. I wanted to celebrate them all.” The first single, ‘Headed South For A While’ premiered in March 2023, with the full album due for release in June.
Ags’ first three albums – How About Now (2014), Nothin’ Unexpected (2017) and Wrong Again (2019) were each named Album Of The Month by Country Music People magazine, who labelled him “an English Willie Nelson” and “the best singer-songwriter in the country field that this country has ever turned out”. Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2 described Wrong Again as “modern day traditionalism of the very, very best kind”. In late 2020, it was named Album Of The Year at the UK Country Music Awards.
A constant presence on the UK, Ireland and European touring and festival circuit, Ags has built a reputation over the years as an uncompromising country traditionalist in the UK and beyond. In an era when the pop and rock incarnations of country music are enjoying a surge in popularity, Ags continues to defend the last outpost of the genre’s traditional roots.
