Study of Slope is a site-specific performance installation performed by a choir of tone-deaf and self-proclaimed non-musical singers, set within a sea of nettles.

Lina Lapelytė explores imbalance and imperfection by highlighting individuals without “musical ear,” challenging the dominant norms of Western music traditions that often exclude voices which do not conform.

The texts performed by the choir are taken from Sean Ashton’s novel Living in a Land — a fictional autobiography in which the narrator describes only things he has never done or will never do. From this absence emerges a chorus of rarely heard voices — a reflection on identity, experience, and the individual’s place within a collective.

Study of Slope allows voices to interact between dissonance and togetherness, between the standardized and the deviant.

Originally scheduled to premiere at Lilith Performance Studio in 2020, Study of Slope was postponed due to the pandemic. Since then, various versions of the work have been presented across Europe. Now it is finally realized in its original Lilith Performance Studio version, transforming the entire studio into a landscape of nettles — plants that both sting and heal — inviting the audience to step inside.

Lina Lapelytė is internationally acclaimed for her genre-defying practice, moving seamlessly between performance and experimental music, pop-cultural references and questions of gender norms.

Her best-known work, the opera-performance Sun & Sea (created in collaboration with Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė and Vaiva Grainytė), was awarded the Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Biennale and has since toured worldwide, including a celebrated presentation at Malmö Konsthall in 2021.
