The Documentary

Iranian star power in mesmerizing play

In this newly written play, Amir Reza Koohestani invites us to follow the making of a documentary film about a newlywed couple. An Iranian woman and a Swedish man, who do not speak each other's languages, have met abroad. When a filmmaker, also Iranian, asks if she can make a documentary by following their day-to-day life, they agree. The couple, who up until now experienced their relationship and cultural differences as entirely undramatic, suddenly begin to discover things that bother and disturb them.

The play explores, among other things, what can happen when a relationship is exposed to an outsider’s perspective, and hidden secrets and differences surfaces.

The cast consist of Mahin Sadri, Mårten Andersson, and Susan Taslimi as the documentary filmmaker. For an Iranian audience, she is widely known as a leading and popular film and theatre actress. Taslimi was banned to work in her homeland, after defying and criticizing the regime.

Iran-based director Amir Reza Koohestani gained international recognition with 'Dance on Glasses' and has recently achieved great success with productions like 'Woyzeck Interrupted' at Deutsches Theater in Berlin.

Performed in Swedish, English, and Persian, with subtitles in Swedish and English.
